Who Wins

Pre-6, Lucian wins short trades decisively because his passive double-shot burst outpaces your passive stack ramp, and Nautilus hook into Lucian combo will kill you if you're caught without stacks built.
Post-6, your R fundamentally shifts the 2v2 — permanent Q activation with upgraded W laser and E dash makes you far more dangerous in extended fights, but you still lose if Nautilus hooks you before R is active.

Your best trading pattern is to use E to close distance and begin stacking Q passively on Lucian, then activate Q once you have stacks and look for W slow to keep him in your splash damage range.
Never initiate into Nautilus hook range without Janna's W or E ready to peel, because a hook-into-Lucian burst will delete you before your damage ramps.

Push the wave aggressively early to deny Lucian his preferred short-trade pattern under tower, since he excels at quick skirmishes in open lane.
Once you hit 6, you can look to fight more freely, but respect that Nautilus can still hook you mid-R and interrupt your window — prioritize shoving and backing over extended 2v2s pre-6.

Do not activate R preemptively in a losing position hoping it saves you — R does not make you tankier and Nautilus hook into Lucian burst will still kill you mid-R if you're low.
Also avoid walking up to trade without your Q stacks partially built, as your damage without stacks is significantly weaker than Lucian's baseline output.
