Who Wins

  • Pre-6, you lose the extended poke war because Vel'Koz outranges you and Kai'Sa can freely farm while you're being zoned by E slow and Q poke — you need to land a hook to create any meaningful trade, and missing it is heavily punished.
  • Post-6, your R gives you a fighting chance in all-ins, but Vel'Koz R is a channel that deals enormous damage and Kai'Sa R makes her slippery, so you still need a clean hook to win.

Synergy & Trading

  • Your best pattern is to absorb a Vel'Koz Q or E on your shield passive, then immediately walk up and throw your Q at Kai'Sa — if it lands, Aphelios can follow up with burst before Vel'Koz can reposition.
  • Never trade into Vel'Koz's full combo range without a hook already in flight, as his stacking passive shreds you in sustained exchanges.

Wave Control/Roaming

  • You want to slow-push and crash waves to deny Kai'Sa safe farming windows, then look for hooks during the reset — Vel'Koz is immobile and a hooked Vel'Koz mid-cast is a free kill.
  • Avoid freezing near your tower because Vel'Koz can safely poke you from outside tower range with no risk.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not walk up to flay or auto-attack without your Q available — Vel'Koz will punish your short-range engage with a full rotation and you have no escape, making you a free kill for Kai'Sa to clean up.
  • Respect the range differential and never trade on Vel'Koz's terms.
