Who Wins

Pre-6, Smolder + Bard win most extended trades due to Bard's Q root and Smolder's stacking damage, but you can win short poke trades if you land your Q and immediately E away before Bard can root you.
Post-6, your R gives you global pressure but the 2v2 remains unfavorable if Bard lands his Q, since Leona's engage is telegraphed and Smolder's R heal becomes a real factor.

Your best pattern is to Q Smolder from max range to deny stacks, then E backward the moment Leona goes in — let Leona absorb the Bard Q root while you follow up with Q from safety.
Never commit to a full trade unless Bard's Q is on cooldown, as the root into Smolder damage will chunk you heavily.

Push the wave early to deny Smolder passive stacks on minions — Smolder needs to Q minions to stack, so a fast-clearing wave forces him to either miss stacks or take poke.
Avoid freezing, as it puts you in range of Bard Q and Leona all-in without escape room.

Do not use E aggressively to close distance for a trade — your E is your only escape against Leona's engage chain, and burning it offensively means you die to the follow-up CC.
Saving E reactively is more important in this matchup than any damage it adds.
