Who Wins

Pre-6, Varus outranges you with his Q and his passive stacks punish you hard if you try to auto-trade without your W slows active; you lose extended trades early and should respect his poke.
Post-6, your R gives you a global engage tool that Janna's R can deny if she reacts fast, but landing it on Varus forces a fight where your W slows and Seraphine's CC chain can overwhelm them.

Your best pattern is to use W to slow Varus, forcing him to either take autos or burn his E to reposition, then let Seraphine layer her E root on top of your slows for a full lockdown.
Never trade into Varus when he has three passive stacks ready — wait for him to waste them on minions or after he misses a Q.

You want a slow push into a freeze-break, using your W to shove the wave when Varus is forced to back or is low, then resetting to deny him CS under tower.
Avoid hard shoving every wave because it removes your ability to punish Varus when he steps up to CS in the open.

Do not stand still to charge your own autos when Varus is in range — he will out-trade you with his charged Q into passive stacks while you are stationary.
Always be moving and only commit to a trade when your W slow is already applied and Seraphine has her E available.
