Who Wins

  • Pre-6, you win this matchup decisively at levels 1 and 2 because your ranged poke with Q costs Aatrox health he cannot easily recover without landing his own abilities.
  • Post-6, the matchup becomes much harder because his R provides healing and AD that can negate your burst window, so you must land your R combo cleanly and finish him before he sustains through it — if he pops R after yours, you are likely losing the extended fight.

How to Trade

  • Your best pattern is to poke with Q from range to chip his health below 60-70%, then use your R to engage when he is low enough that your burst can kill him before his omnivamp and R healing kick in.
  • Avoid extended fights at all costs — place your shadow, deal your damage, and immediately return to it; staying in melee range against a healthy Aatrox with R active is a losing proposition.

Wave Control

  • Push the wave quickly with your Q to maintain lane priority and deny Aatrox the ability to set up favorable all-in scenarios near his tower where his sustain is most dangerous.
  • Use your wave advantage to roam or force him to make decisions under pressure, as Aatrox is slow and cannot follow you effectively, which turns your lane lead into map pressure.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not use your R reactively after he pops his R — his fear on R activation can interrupt your combo timing and his healing during your burst window means you may not secure the kill, leaving you vulnerable with your ultimate on cooldown.
  • Avoid trading when the wave is pushing toward him, as the minion damage adds up and his omnivamp lets him heal off the entire wave while you fight him.
