Who Wins

  • Pre-6 you win almost every extended trade because your W cage removes Irelia's ability to Q out, and your ghouls plus E slow keep her locked in sustained damage she cannot escape; level 2 is a meaningful spike if you hit W before she can stack passive, as she has no reliable escape from the cage at that point.
  • Post-6 your R maiden fundamentally changes the lane — you can place maiden on the opposite side of the cage to force Irelia to deal with both simultaneously, and your healing from ghouls attacking the same target as you makes you nearly unkillable in a full fight.

How to Trade

  • Your best trading pattern is to land E first to slow Irelia and prevent her from freely stacking passive on minions, then immediately drop W to cage her before she can Q away; once she is caged, auto-attack while your ghouls attack her, and use your passive healing to sustain through her burst — the key is that the cage must land before she has a full passive stack, otherwise her resistances reduce your damage window significantly.

Wave Control

  • You want to slow-push the wave by last-hitting and letting ghouls build up, then crash a large wave into her tower to create a freeze or a recall situation; a frozen wave near your side forces Irelia to overextend to farm, which is where your W cage punishes her hardest with no escape route.
  • Avoid hard shoving early because a pushed wave removes your cage threat and lets Irelia safely Q reset on minions to stack passive without risk.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not waste your W cage on a minion or use it reactively after Irelia has already stacked her passive — a caged Irelia with full passive stacks has enough resistances and damage to trade favorably even inside the cage, so you must use W proactively before she completes her stack or you lose the trade you designed to win.
