Who Wins

  • Pre-6, you win most trades at levels 1–3 because your Q poke and Q3 knockup let you dictate engagement range before Cho'Gath has meaningful sustain stacked; however, respect his Q root — if it lands, his W burst at early levels hurts more than players expect.
  • Post-6, Cho'Gath's R is a one-shot threat if you are not full health, so you must respect his all-in potential and avoid fighting him when he has R available unless you can burst him before he casts it.

How to Trade

  • Your best trading pattern is to use Q twice to build the third stack, then engage with E to close distance, land Q3 knockup, and follow with W before dashing back out with E's return; this keeps you mobile and avoids prolonged melee range where Cho'Gath's W silence and passive healing punish you.
  • Never let the trade go long — Cho'Gath's sustain from passive and W means extended fights favor him as the game progresses.

Wave Control

  • Play for short aggressive trades and reset to lane rather than trying to shove the wave, as Cho'Gath's W clears waves efficiently and you do not out-push him; instead, focus on denying his passive healing stacks by keeping him low enough that he cannot safely walk up to last-hit.
  • If you have a kill lead, freeze the wave near your tower to deny him stacks and force him into unfavorable positions.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not use E aggressively when Cho'Gath has R available and you are below roughly 60% HP — his R is an instant, point-blank execute that will kill you before your E return triggers.
  • Many Yone players also overextend on the Q3 knockup combo without checking if Cho'Gath has his Q ready, resulting in a root that turns your all-in into a death.
