Scuttle Contest

At level 3, you lose the direct scuttle fight against Xin Zhao because his Q knockup into E knockback disrupts your ability to cycle shields and sustain through his burst before you have enough stacks built.
From level 6, you win extended 1v1s by forcing prolonged fights where you cycle W repeatedly to sustain through his damage, but you must avoid his E displacement which resets his Q and gives him a second burst window.

Xin Zhao typically runs a three-camp path starting on the side closest to his bot lane for early leash, clearing Red or Blue into the adjacent camps, then looking to contest scuttle around 3:15.
He is aggressive and will often look for an early gank or invade if he sees an opportunity, so ward your second buff and play with awareness of his position.

You should not invade Xin Zhao at level 3 because his burst CC pattern beats your ramp-up style in short trades.
Wait until level 6 when your sustained damage and W cycling make you significantly harder to kill, then look to contest objectives or counter-gank rather than direct invades, as fighting him in the open on even footing before that point is a losing proposition.

Do not walk into Xin Zhao when he has his Q fully stacked and is ready to engage, as eating the full Q knockup into E knockback puts you in a position where you cannot cycle shields fast enough to survive the burst.
Avoid fighting him near walls where his E can knock you into terrain, and never fight him when he has a significant level or item advantage, as his scaling is more front-loaded than yours.
