Who Wins

  • Pre-6, you win most trades at all early levels because your W's damage reduction and consistent E-auto-Q damage output exceeds Irelia's burst unless she has a full passive stack; at level 2 you can bully her hard if she doesn't have passive stacked.
  • Post-6, your R fundamentally changes the dynamic — you can drop R in a narrow corridor or on top of her to deny her Q reset mobility and force her to fight in sustained damage, which you win, or disengage entirely.

How to Trade

  • Your best pattern is to maintain your heat bar in the 50–75% range (empowered autos and abilities without silencing yourself), use W reactively when she engages with E, and kite with E slows to prevent her from freely chaining Q resets through you.
  • If she overextends, drop R to cut off her escape path and follow up with empowered autos while W is active.

Wave Control

  • You want to slow-push the wave by last-hitting carefully and letting it build, then use the large wave as cover to threaten her with your heat-empowered abilities; she cannot freely all-in you when a big wave is present because she risks losing minions and you can W through her damage.
  • When she shoves, use that time to manage your heat and poke her with E before she can reset to base safely.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not overheat at a bad time — silencing yourself in the middle of her all-in removes your W damage reduction and your ability to respond, which is the single scenario where she can kill you despite your kit's strength in this matchup.
  • Also avoid placing R in open space where she can simply Q through it; place it in chokepoints or directly on her to maximize the slow and damage while limiting her Q reset angles.
