LaneDiff costs me $50/month to run. If it helped you win a lane, a small tip keeps it alive. 💙

Who Wins
- Pre-6, Gnar's range advantage and poke-heavy pattern make this lane difficult for you — he can consistently chip you down with autos and Q before you can close the gap, and your passive shield helps absorb some poke but doesn't fully compensate for the range deficit.
- At level 3 you gain your full combo (W into E), which is your first real window to punish Gnar if he overextends or wastes his E, but Mini Gnar's mobility still makes landing your E unreliable.
- Post-6, your R gives you a strong teamfight tool but doesn't dramatically shift the 1v1 — Mega Gnar's R can CC you out of your own combo and his tankiness in that form means he can trade back effectively.
- You win extended fights if you land your full combo, but Gnar's ability to disengage or burst you in Mega form keeps this matchup roughly even to slightly Gnar-favored in solo kill potential.
How to Trade
- Your best trade pattern is to wait for Gnar to use his E (hop) aggressively or to be low on Rage, then engage with W to apply Brittle and immediately follow with E to proc the knockup and bonus damage.
- Avoid initiating when Gnar has full Rage, as he can transform mid-trade and use his Mega R to CC you and negate your combo entirely.
- If you land your Q pillar first, you can use E to headbutt into it for a guaranteed knockup, but Mini Gnar's mobility makes setting this up in lane very difficult without a wall nearby.
- Short trades heavily favor Gnar due to his range, so you must commit to full extended trades with W active to extract value.
Wave Control
- You should generally push the wave to deny Gnar the ability to poke you freely under his own tower pressure, as a shoved wave forces him to last-hit under tower and reduces his safe poke windows.
- Your wave clear with W is decent but not exceptional early, so prioritize using W on the wave when Gnar is not in range to punish your immobility during the channel.
- Avoid letting the wave sit in the middle of the lane, as that is where Gnar has the most freedom to poke you without risk.
- Once you have Sunfire or your first major item, you can control the wave more confidently and look to freeze near your tower to bait Gnar into unfavorable all-ins.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not initiate your E charge when Gnar has his E available, as he will simply hop away and you will waste your primary engage tool on a missed knockup.
- Many Ornn players also make the mistake of using W purely for damage rather than timing it to ensure Brittle is applied before the E lands — if you E before W finishes, you lose the Brittle proc and deal significantly less damage.
- Avoid fighting Mega Gnar at full health unless you have a clear positional advantage, as his CC chain can interrupt your combo and leave you vulnerable.
- Finally, do not neglect your passive shield timing — it regenerates periodically and absorbing a Gnar Q or auto with it can be the difference in a close trade.
