LaneDiff costs me $50/month to run. If it helped you win a lane, a small tip keeps it alive. 💙

Who Wins
- Pre-6, you have a clear advantage due to your range, Q poke, and E mobility — Mini Gnar can consistently harass Ornn without allowing him to retaliate, and Ornn has no reliable way to close the gap if you respect his E range.
- At level 2 you gain your E, which is critical for dodging his E charge, making his primary engage tool nearly useless if you play around it properly.
- Post-6, the matchup becomes more volatile — Mega Gnar can all-in Ornn and use R to CC him through his W Unstoppable (since Unstoppable only prevents new CC, not damage), but Ornn's R gives him a strong teamfight equalizer and his tankiness means you cannot always guarantee a kill.
- You maintain a lane advantage but must respect Ornn's damage output in extended fights, especially once he completes his first tank item.
How to Trade
- Your best trade pattern is to poke with Q and autos during Mini Gnar phase, building Rage while keeping Ornn low, then look for an all-in when you transform into Mega Gnar with Ornn near a wall for your R knockup.
- In Mini Gnar, never commit to a full melee trade — use your range to auto-attack and Q from outside his E range, and use your E to escape if he closes the gap.
- When Mega Gnar, your R into a wall followed by W and autos is your kill combo, and Ornn's W Unstoppable does not protect him from your R's displacement.
- Avoid extended fights in Mini form at close range, as Ornn's W Brittle into E knockup will outdamage you if he lands the full sequence.
Wave Control
- You want to control the wave to maintain a mid-lane position where your range advantage is maximized and Ornn cannot easily engage on you near terrain.
- Avoid hard shoving the wave early, as it puts you close to Ornn's tower where wall interactions make his E and Q pillar combos more dangerous.
- A slow push or freeze near your side of the lane is ideal, as it forces Ornn to walk up into your poke range to farm.
- When you have Rage building and the wave is in a favorable position, look to all-in with Mega Gnar before Ornn can disengage or use his passive shield to absorb key hits.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not waste your E reactively to every Ornn E attempt — if you use it too early, you will have no escape and he can follow up with his full combo.
- Many Gnar players make the mistake of transforming into Mega Gnar without a wall nearby, losing the primary kill condition of the R knockup and wasting the form's all-in potential.
- Avoid standing in positions where Ornn can use terrain or his Q pillar to guarantee his E knockup, particularly near the side walls of the top lane.
- Finally, do not ignore Ornn's R in teamfights — his ability to redirect it means you cannot simply walk away after the first pass, and being hit twice will apply Brittle and set up his team for significant follow-up damage.
