Who Wins
- Pre-6, you win short trades at level 1 with Q poke and auto-resets, but Illaoi's E at level 3 shifts the dynamic significantly — if she lands E and you fight under her tentacles, she out-sustains and out-damages you even with your lifesteal.
- Post-6, your R removes her W slow and her R's CC component is irrelevant against you, making extended all-ins heavily in your favor as long as you don't fight near multiple tentacles.
How to Trade
- Your best pattern is to Q her from range to chip health, then commit to a full extended trade only when she has no tentacles nearby or has recently missed her E — your sustained DPS with lifesteal beats her burst-heal combo when she can't proc tentacle hits repeatedly.
- Never short-trade and walk away, as her passive tentacle regeneration means she recovers faster than you do from small skirmishes.
Wave Control
- Push the wave consistently to deny her the static tentacle setup she needs — Illaoi is strongest when the wave is slow and she has time to place and proc tentacles, so a fast-moving wave near her tower limits her E range and forces awkward tentacle angles.
- Avoid freezing near her tower where tentacles can stack up; instead, crash waves and reset to deny her ideal fighting conditions.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not fight her during her R under any circumstances before you have R yourself, and even post-6 avoid fighting when 3+ tentacles are active nearby — your R negates her CC but not the raw tentacle damage output, which scales with tentacle count and will kill you faster than your lifesteal can compensate.
- Walking into her R with a full tentacle setup is a death sentence regardless of your ultimate.
