Who Wins

  • Pre-6, you lose level 1 to Olaf's raw auto-attack damage and Q poke unless you can land E immediately, but level 3 is your first meaningful power spike where E into W tentacle slam can chunk him heavily if he overextends.
  • Post-6, you lose the extended all-in to his R because he becomes unstoppable and out-sustains your tentacle healing with his own lifesteal while ignoring your W slow entirely.

How to Trade

  • Your best pattern is to land E to extract his spirit, then position between him and the spirit so tentacles hit him repeatedly while you W-slam — this forces him to either take massive damage or burn flash to escape the spirit before it expires.
  • If he has R available, do not commit to a full trade; instead use E poke and disengage, as his R turns your sustained fight pattern into a losing exchange.

Wave Control

  • Hold the wave in a slow freeze near your side of the lane to allow tentacles to spawn and persist — Illaoi's tentacles are permanent structures that accumulate over time, and a frozen wave near your tower creates a tentacle minefield that makes any all-in from Olaf extremely dangerous.
  • Avoid pushing aggressively early because a fast wave near his tower removes your tentacle advantage and lets him fight you in a clean environment where his sustained DPS wins.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not use R reactively when he activates his R — his R makes him immune to your R's knockup and slow, meaning you waste your ultimate and are left vulnerable with a long cooldown while he freely attacks you.
  • Save your R for when he is low and his R is on cooldown, or use it proactively before he can react to force him out of the fight entirely.
