Who Wins

  • Pre-6, you lose to Illaoi if she lands E and follows up properly — her tentacle damage combined with the spirit mechanic will chunk you heavily before you can respond.
  • Post-6, your R gives you enough bulk and stat boost to survive her R window if you activate it reactively, but you must not let her stack tentacles around you before engaging, or her R burst will still kill you even through your R.

How to Trade

  • Your best trading pattern is to use W the moment she commits to an auto-attack chain or after she lands E on you, as it halves her physical damage and makes her extended trade far less threatening.
  • After W is active, you can Q her freely and sustain back with your passive lifesteal, but keep trades short — never let her R come up while you're already low.

Wave Control

  • Your optimal wave strategy is to Q-stack safely under the threat of her E by staying at max range and only stepping up to last-hit when her E is on cooldown, which is roughly 18 seconds at early ranks.
  • If she freezes near her tower, respect it and stack on cannon minions or look for a back — do not force a fight into a frozen wave with tentacles nearby.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not use W preemptively or waste it on a minion — it is your primary defensive tool against her trade pattern and losing it at the wrong moment means she can freely auto-chain you for full damage during her E follow-up.
  • Also avoid standing near tentacles when low on health, as her R will cause all nearby tentacles to slam simultaneously and the burst is enough to kill you even if you think you're safe.
