Pre-6, Akali wins every extended trade and most short trades due to her mobility, burst, and passive empowered autos; you have no reliable way to punish her and your W slow is too short-ranged to consistently land before she disengages.
Post-6, you become a threat only if you have significant Q stacks and can land W into a full combo, but Akali's R gives her two dashes to reset and re-engage on her terms, meaning she still controls the fight unless you have a substantial level and stack advantage.

Your best trading pattern is to bait her shroud by walking toward her, then immediately W the moment she steps out to auto or use E, following up with E and Q; without her shroud active she is far more vulnerable, and forcing her to waste it before committing to a trade is the only way to get favorable damage.
Never initiate a trade yourself without W available, as she will simply out-rotate you with her mobility and you will take the worst of the exchange.

Push the wave hard early to force Akali to either farm under tower or engage you on your terms near your turret, where her all-in is riskier and your W slow has more value in a confined space.
Avoid letting the wave sit in the middle of the lane, as that gives her the ideal environment to poke you with passive procs and E without you being able to respond effectively.

Do not waste your W trying to catch her mid-dash or inside her shroud, as she will simply wait it out and re-engage once the slow expires, leaving you with no defensive tool.
Chasing her after a failed trade is equally punishing because she can turn with R and burst you down when you are already damaged and out of position.
