Pre-6, Xin Zhao wins most extended trades through levels 1-3 due to his E knock-up, Q three-hit empowered attack, and W healing sustain giving him reliable burst and recovery you lack early; you need to play reactively, stack your passive safely from range, and avoid committing to full trades until your W shield is meaningful.
Post-6, you win decisively in your R because you steal a percentage of Xin Zhao's AD and HP, gutting his damage and durability while your passive aura and Q deal sustained magic damage he cannot heal through.

Your best trading pattern is to stack your passive to 3 marks at range using Q poke, then engage with E to pull him into melee range and proc the passive aura, immediately activating W to absorb his retaliation and then reactivating it for healing once he's committed.
Never trade when your passive is on cooldown or your W shield is empty — Xin Zhao's burst window is short but punishing, so you want to absorb his combo with W and outlast him with passive damage.

Push the wave consistently using Q on minions to build passive stacks and zone Xin Zhao off CS, as your AoE passive aura and Q clear give you wave priority that forces him to either take poke or lose farm.
Avoid freezing unless you are significantly behind, because a frozen wave near his tower removes your ability to all-in with R and gives him jungle assistance opportunities where his early game strength is amplified.

Do not use R on Xin Zhao when he still has his W active and full HP early in the game before you have any items, as he can still out-trade you inside the Death Realm if you haven't built enough AP to make your stat steal and passive aura meaningful.
