Who Wins

Pre-6, Gragas wins most trades because his E-Q-W combo lets him burst you, absorb your retaliation with his W, and disengage before your passive aura deals meaningful damage — you need 3 passive stacks to proc your aura, and Gragas can poke and reset before you stack it consistently.
At level 3 you gain access to your full kit and can attempt to stack passive more reliably, but Gragas still has enough mobility and self-sustain to avoid your E pull and escape extended trades.
Post-6, you win decisively — R removes his E escape tool entirely, you steal a percentage of his stats including his tankiness, and your passive aura combined with stolen stats makes you nearly unkillable inside the Death Realm.

Your best trading pattern is to absorb one Gragas ability with your W shield active, then immediately E to pull him in and proc your passive aura before he can disengage — the key is not initiating before your W shield is partially stacked from his poke.
Never trade without your passive mark ready to proc, as your damage without the aura is insufficient to punish Gragas before he escapes with his E.
Post-6, always R after landing your E so he cannot use his E to escape the Death Realm.

You want to push the wave consistently to deny Gragas his preferred poke pattern — when he is forced to last-hit under pressure, he cannot freely throw Q at you from range.
Use your Q on the wave to shove efficiently, then look to stack your passive on Gragas when he steps up to CS.
Avoid letting the wave freeze near his tower, as Gragas can zone you off CS with Q poke while you are vulnerable and away from your own tower safety.

Do not use your R on Gragas when he has his E available and you have not landed your E first — he can use his E inside the Death Realm to create distance and reduce the duration he spends in your passive aura, significantly reducing your kill pressure.
Burning his E before pressing R is mandatory, otherwise you are giving him a free escape tool inside the one environment designed to favor you.
