Who Wins

  • Pre-6 you win this lane convincingly through Q poke and passive Overwhelm stacking, as Yi has no reliable way to close the gap without eating damage.
  • Post-6 the matchup stays in your favor because your R can detonate stacks globally and your W can negate his Q gap-close, but a fed Yi with Highlander active is fast enough to threaten you if you misposition.

How to Trade

  • Your optimal trade pattern is to stack Overwhelm passively through Q poke and empowered autos, then use E to root him if he walks up, and follow with Q burst while he's immobilized.
  • Save W specifically for when he commits to an all-in with Q — reflecting his projectiles during his engage punishes him heavily and the invulnerability lets you survive his burst window.

Wave Control

  • Use Q to control the wave and zone Yi off CS simultaneously, as he must walk into your range to last-hit and you can punish every approach.
  • Slow-pushing a large wave into his tower forces him to choose between taking poke damage or losing CS, and denying him gold keeps him from reaching the item spikes that make him dangerous.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not waste W preemptively or use it as a movement tool — it is your single most important defensive cooldown against Yi's all-in and mistiming it means you have no answer when he actually commits.
  • Avoid letting Overwhelm stacks fall off by staying active in trades, as your R damage is entirely dependent on stack count and a low-stack R will not kill him.
