Scuttle Contest

At level 3, you lose the scuttle fight against Sylas due to his superior range, CC chain from E and W sustain, and your lack of meaningful gap-close outside of Q which can be interrupted mid-animation by his E.
From level 6, you can win a 1v1 only if you bait out his E before committing with Q, as his E will knock you back and reset your Q targeting; once E is on cooldown, your sustained DPS with W active and Q resets will outdamage him if you are ahead in items.

Sylas most commonly runs a full clear starting Red Buff side, prioritizing Raptors and Wolves for early stacks, then looking for an early gank at level 3 due to his strong pre-6 skirmish potential with E and W.
He will often path toward your side of the map after his first clear to contest scuttle or invade your second buff.

You should not invade Sylas early; his E provides a knockback that completely negates your Q repositioning and he sustains through trades with W, making 1v1 invades before you have items heavily unfavorable.
If you must contest, wait until after he has used E in a gank or fight, then invade his buff at approximately 3:30 when it respawns and he is likely on the opposite side of the map.

Do not use Q as a pure gap-closer into Sylas without confirming his E is on cooldown, as he will E you mid-Q animation, knock you back, and immediately follow with W to heal back a significant portion of the trade damage you dealt.
