Who Wins
- Pre-6, you lose direct all-ins against Garen because your Q stacking takes time and Garen's Q silence prevents you from executing the E follow-up reliably — however, at level 3 you gain meaningful poke access with Q and can start building stacks from range if you respect the silence range.
- Post-6, you become a genuine kill threat because your R execution mechanic combined with W true damage bypasses Garen's W damage reduction, but you must still respect that Garen's silence mid-combo will cancel your E dash and leave you in melee range with no escape.
How to Trade
- Your optimal trading pattern is to land 2–3 Q stacks from outside Garen's Q range, then E in only when Garen has committed to an action or is walking away — immediately activate W for the attack speed steroid and consume stacks with autos before recasting W to heal if you took significant damage.
- Never open with E because Garen will Q silence you the moment you land, stripping your ability to auto-attack chain and leaving you in a losing melee brawl with no mobility to escape.
Wave Control
- Play for a slow poke wave state where the wave is near your side or even — this gives you range to stack Q safely while Garen struggles to engage without overextending, and it denies him the ability to all-in you under tower protection.
- Avoid letting Garen hard shove the wave into your tower because you lose your safe stacking distance and he can dive you at level 6 with R, which your W heal may not fully compensate for if you are already low from the push.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not activate W as an offensive steroid and then panic-recast it immediately when Garen spins — the true damage you take during W is the cost of the heal on recast, so cutting it short wastes both the attack speed window and the healing value, leaving you with neither damage nor sustain.
- Never use E as an escape tool when Garen is silenced or on cooldown; it resets on takedown but has a meaningful cooldown otherwise, and burning it defensively leaves you with no engage tool to cash in your Q stacks when the kill window opens.
