Pre-6, you win the lane through consistent Q poke because Aatrox has no reliable way to close the gap instantly and your Q range lets you chip him down before he can land a full combo.
Post-6, your R becomes a critical defensive tool — if you use it on yourself the moment he activates his R and commits to an all-in, you negate his burst window and can disengage safely, but if you waste it offensively or panic too early, he will out-sustain and kill you.

Your best trading pattern is to land Q from max range to proc the slow, then immediately follow with W if he walks into range, and back off before he can complete his Q chain — you are not trying to win a sustained fight, you are trying to whittle him down over multiple short exchanges.
Never let him get his E repositioning off freely during your W root, as a skilled Aatrox will use E to reach the sweet spot of Q3 even while rooted if you misposition.

You should maintain a slight push advantage to keep Aatrox near his tower, reducing his room to walk up for Q combos and limiting his ability to use E aggressively without being punished by tower.
However, avoid hard shoving every wave carelessly, because an overextended position without vision invites his jungler to dive you, and Aatrox's R makes tower dives significantly more dangerous for you than for him.

Do not use your R offensively to engage on Aatrox unless he is already low, because burning your R as a damage tool leaves you with no escape when he activates his R and chases you down with the movement speed bonus.
