Pre-6 you win this lane clearly through levels 1–3 by stacking W passively on autos and Q poke while staying outside her E range — she has no reliable way to close the gap if you respect her E and you can chunk her down significantly before she has meaningful sustain tools.
Post-6 the matchup becomes genuinely dangerous because her R combined with a landed E creates a kill window that your R can counter but only if you use it proactively to disengage or stun her before tentacles empower.

Your best trading pattern is short extended poke trades: auto to stack W, Q to add a stack, then auto again to proc the stun, and immediately back out before she can land E — the stun gives you a free window to deal bonus damage and reset distance.
Never stand still fishing for a full combo inside her melee range because her passive tentacles will slam you repeatedly during any extended fight near them.

You want to maintain a slight freeze or slow push to deny her the large wave she needs to threaten you under tower, since a controlled wave keeps her walking up into your poke range rather than her dictating the engage.
Use your superior wave clear to shove when she backs so she loses plates or CS, but do not over-extend past river without vision because she only needs one E to land to turn the entire dynamic.

Do not use your E aggressively to close distance onto her — E is your escape tool and burning it to trade means you have no answer when she lands E and pops R on top of you.
Many Kennen players get overconfident from early poke leads and walk into a fully set-up Illaoi R with no mobility left, which is an instant death regardless of how far ahead you are.
