Who Wins

  • Pre-6, Garen wins every extended trade and most short trades due to his W damage reduction, passive regen, and the fact that your Q silence is short and your damage is low without items — you lose levels 1 through 5 almost unconditionally, and level 3 is particularly dangerous because Garen can run you down with E and chunk you heavily.
  • Post-6, you gain the edge through repeated R skirmishes, kiting, and the ability to disengage or re-engage on your terms, but Garen's R can still execute you if you let your HP drop too low.

How to Trade

  • Your best trading pattern is to Q him to silence his W activation, immediately follow with E for the slow and damage, auto-attack once, then R out before his E spin deals sustained damage — never stand still inside his E range.
  • Repeat this every time your R is up, forcing him to back or die incrementally, but only engage when his passive regen is not active.

Wave Control

  • Push the wave early to deny him free passive regen under tower, then back off to avoid his all-in — a shoved wave forces him to last-hit under tower, limiting his ability to run you down.
  • Once you hit 6, you can start freezing or slow-pushing to create repeated R trade opportunities while keeping yourself safe from his execute R.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not stand at melee range or attempt extended trades at any point pre-6, as his W plus passive regen will out-sustain your damage and his E will chunk you for more than you deal.
  • Avoid letting your HP drop below roughly 40% at any stage, because Garen's R becomes a near-guaranteed kill threat and you lose your post-6 comeback window entirely.
