Who Wins

  • Pre-6 you win this lane clearly through range advantage and passive stacking — at level 1 and 2 you can freely auto-attack him to stack your passive and deal consistent damage while he has no reliable way to reach you without burning Q.
  • Post-6 the dynamic shifts slightly because his R becomes a one-shot threat on you if you are below roughly 50% health, so you must respect his kill range and use your R defensively to reposition rather than staying in range of his engage.

How to Trade

  • Your best pattern is to use W to poke him from max range, then follow up with autos to stack your passive, and if he walks up to trade, use E to reposition sideways or backward so his Q silence and E spin deal minimal damage before he has to disengage.
  • Never stand still in his E range — your damage comes from sustained auto-attack pressure at range, not from standing in melee range trading hits.

Wave Control

  • You want to slow-push or freeze the wave near your side of the lane to force him to overextend to reach CS, which opens him up to jungle ganks and denies him the ability to all-in you safely with Q.
  • Avoid shoving the wave into his tower because that removes your spacing advantage and lets him sit under tower where your poke is less effective and his all-in threat is higher.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not underestimate his R execute range — many Kai'Sa players get comfortable poking him down and then stand at 40% health thinking they are safe, only to get one-shot by his R which has a very long range and deals true damage scaling with his health.
  • Always track his R cooldown and back or use your R to reposition when you are in his kill threshold.
