Who Wins

  • Pre-6, you win at level 1 if you can stack your passive to 4 before engaging, as your empowered Q resets and true damage output far exceed Akali's early damage; however, Akali's E gives her a reliable gap-close and escape, so if you miss your Q reset chain she can trade back efficiently and disengage safely.
  • Post-6, Akali's R gives her two dashes and a shroud that completely negate your ability to stick to her, making sustained all-ins extremely difficult unless you have your passive fully stacked and land your E stun precisely.

How to Trade

  • Your best trading pattern is to reset your Q on minions to stack your passive to 4 before engaging, then E onto Akali to stun her and immediately chain Q resets through her while your W is active for the damage reduction.
  • Never commit to a long trade without your passive stacked, as Akali's burst in a short window can outdamage you if you're caught at low stacks.

Wave Control

  • You want to freeze the wave near your tower early to deny Akali's roam potential and force her to overextend for CS, which creates kill windows when your passive is stacked.
  • Avoid hard shoving unless you have vision control, because Akali's R mobility makes her an exceptional roamer and a pushed wave gives her free map pressure.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not blindly Q onto Akali when she has her W available, as she will shroud immediately and you will lose your Q reset target, leaving you overextended with no passive stacks and no escape.
  • This is the single most common way Irelia players throw the matchup — committing to an all-in only to have the shroud deny your entire combo.
