Who Wins
- Pre-6, Heimerdinger's turrets and range advantage make early levels heavily unfavorable for you — you cannot freely walk up to land E without eating significant poke, and your W tentacle slams require proximity you cannot safely establish.
- Post-6, your R fundamentally changes the matchup by pulling a spirit and generating tentacles that punish his immobility, but only if you can land E first, which Heimerdinger's W slow and turret zoning actively prevent.
How to Trade
- Your best trading pattern is to bait out his W grenade slow, then immediately dash in with E to pull the spirit and activate R simultaneously — the tentacle burst during R is your only window to deal meaningful damage before his turrets shred you.
- Never attempt extended trades without R active, as his turret DPS and poke sustain will out-damage your passive healing over time.
Wave Control
- You need to shove the wave hard with Q and W tentacle slams to deny him free turret placement on a frozen wave — a frozen wave near his tower is a death trap for you because his turrets become permanent fixtures that make any engage suicidal.
- Prioritize crashing waves and backing, forcing him to spend time resetting turrets rather than stacking them in a comfortable position.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not walk into a fully stacked turret formation without R active — this is the single most common way Illaoi players die in this matchup, as three turrets plus his Q beam will kill you faster than your passive can sustain.
- Avoid standing still during trades; his turrets require a stationary or slow-moving target to maximize DPS, so constant lateral movement reduces their effectiveness significantly.
