Who Wins

  • Pre-6, you win levels 1 and 2 clearly with E poke and W sustain, and at level 3 you can look for a full E-into-auto-W trade if Irelia has no passive stacks — however, a fully stacked Irelia at level 3 can burst you faster than your W heals, so respect her all-in window.
  • Post-6, the matchup becomes volatile: your R is a critical tool to disrupt her combo mid-chain, but if she lands her E stun before you can R, she wins the fight outright.

How to Trade

  • Your best trading pattern is to poke with E from max range to chip her down and force passive stack resets, then when she steps forward to stack on minions, punish with an auto-W-auto combo and back off before she can chain Q resets.
  • In extended trades, keep W active to sustain through her damage and use your body-slam E to reposition rather than engage, as it doubles as an escape tool.

Wave Control

  • You want to slow-push the wave by last-hitting and letting it build in your favor, then use the large wave as a deterrent against her all-in — she cannot freely Q-chain through a massive wave crashing into your tower without overextending.
  • Use your E and barrel W to zone her off the wave and deny her passive stacks, which directly reduces her combat effectiveness.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not use your R aggressively to initiate — it is your most important defensive tool to interrupt her mid-combo, and burning it offensively leaves you with no answer to her E-stun into full chain.
  • Also avoid standing in predictable positions where she can Q onto a minion directly into your face, as she will immediately E stun you before you can react with W or E.
