Who Wins

  • Pre-6, Hwei's long-range poke with his painting combos, particularly his damage-over-time and slow tools, makes it very difficult for you to walk up safely without taking consistent chip damage; however, once you hit level 3 and have Q, W, and E available, you can use E to close the gap through his skillshots and punish him if he mispositions, making the lane more interactive.
  • Post-6, your R gives you a significant power spike because you can all-in, absorb his burst with the rewind, and re-engage with full health — Hwei has no reliable escape and his R is a channeled setup tool, not a defensive one, so you win extended all-ins decisively.

How to Trade

  • Your best trading pattern is to bait out his key skillshots by walking up and back, then dash in with E onto your Q clone to proc your passive shield, trade aggressively, and back off before his full combo lands — never stand still in his paintings or you absorb the full damage-over-time.
  • Short trades favor you when you have passive stacked, and all-ins favor you post-6 when you can use R to negate his burst and reset the fight.

Wave Control

  • You want to shove the wave quickly with Q and roam, as Hwei is a strong waveclear champion who will outscale you in side-lane pressure if the game goes long — denying him farm by forcing him to respond to your roams is more valuable than fighting him in lane repeatedly.
  • Avoid letting the wave freeze under his tower, as his ranged poke will punish you every time you walk up to last-hit in a slow wave state.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not walk into his paintings and stand still trying to trade — his damage-over-time zones deal significant damage if you remain in them, and combining that with his slow and follow-up abilities will shred your health bar before you can proc your passive or land a meaningful trade.
  • Patience before engaging is critical; forcing a dash onto him while he has all abilities available and you have no passive shield is how you lose trades you should be winning.
