Who Wins
- Pre-6, Garen wins most short trades due to his Q silence preventing you from throwing Q and his W reducing your damage significantly; you lose extended trades early because your sustain hasn't scaled yet and Garen's passive regenerates HP faster than you deal damage at low levels.
- Post-6, the matchup shifts in your favor as your R gives you a massive HP threshold and your passive sustain becomes oppressive, making Garen unable to kill you in extended fights if you stay healthy.
How to Trade
- Your best trading pattern is to poke with Q from max range to chip Garen down before committing, then only engage in extended trades once Garen has used his W, since fighting through his W early is a losing proposition.
- Kite backward while keeping Q on cooldown to deny his passive regeneration from activating, forcing him to either take chip damage or overextend.
Wave Control
- Push the wave aggressively with E to deny Garen's passive regeneration window in lane, since Garen needs to be out of combat for several seconds to stack his passive and a constantly contested wave prevents that.
- Avoid letting the wave freeze under his tower because walking up to last-hit exposes you to his Q silence combo with no escape tool.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not walk into melee range to trade when Garen has Q available, as the silence completely shuts down your ability to throw Q mid-trade and you will lose the exchange every time.
- Avoid using R as a panic button when low — save it for when you can actually survive the fight, since Garen's R executes you below a health threshold and your R does not prevent that execution.
