Who Wins

  • Pre-6, you win most extended trades if you can land E to close the gap, as Smolder has no reliable escape and your W slow combined with passive stacks will chunk him heavily; however, Smolder's range advantage means he can poke you down before you engage, so you need to respect his Q harass and approach through minion cover.
  • Post-6, you win decisively in any all-in where you can stack bleed and R execute, but Smolder's R gives him a long-range disengage tool that can deny your kill if he's healthy enough to use it.

How to Trade

  • Your best trading pattern is to absorb one or two Smolder Q pokes while walking up, then commit fully with E into W slow, auto-Q-auto to stack passive quickly, and force him to either fight or burn his mobility.
  • Never trade in short bursts — Smolder wins short poke exchanges due to range; you only win when you extend the trade long enough for passive bleed to deal significant damage.

Wave Control

  • You want to shove the wave early to deny Smolder safe farming range, as he needs to walk up to last-hit and that exposes him to your E.
  • After shoving, reset or look for all-ins under his tower where his kiting space is limited and your E pull is more reliable.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not walk in a straight line toward Smolder without minion cover — his Q has enough range to freely poke you and he can stack his own passive stacks on you over time, which will make your all-in riskier than it should be.
  • Avoid using E recklessly at long range; a missed E is a long cooldown that gives Smolder a free window to poke or disengage safely.
