Who Wins

  • Pre-6, you lose the poke war at levels 1-2 since Gnar's Q range exceeds your auto range and you cannot safely stack your W passive.
  • At level 3 you gain meaningful all-in threat with E-W-Q, but Gnar's W slow and Mini form mobility still let him disengage, so you need to respect his rage bar before committing.
  • Post-6, your R is one of the strongest tools in this matchup — isolating Gnar in your cage removes his escape options and lets your W true damage shred him, especially if he is in Mini form.

How to Trade

  • Your best pattern is to wait for Gnar to waste his W or E, then hard engage with your E to stick to him and proc both hits of your W for the true damage.
  • Short trades favor Gnar due to his range; you need to commit to extended fights where your W true damage and sustained DPS overcome his burst, ideally when he is in Mini form with no rage.

Wave Control

  • Let Gnar push the wave into you early so you can farm safely under tower and avoid his Q poke in open lane.
  • Once you have enough items to threaten all-ins, look to freeze near your tower to bait him into overextending, then punish with E-R when his rage bar is low and he cannot transform to escape.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not use your E aggressively when Gnar has full or near-full rage — a successful engage into Mega Gnar means you absorb his R knockback and W slow with no escape, which will likely kill you.
  • Avoid trading into his W slow without your E available, as being kited by a ranged champion without your gap-closer is how you lose this lane passively.
