Who Wins

  • Pre-6, you win most extended trades if you maintain soldier positioning — your auto-attack range through soldiers and the poke from Q-repositioning outranges Karthus significantly, and Karthus has no reliable way to close the gap or punish you unless you walk into his W zone.
  • Post-6, your R gives you a disengage tool that makes you nearly unkillable in a straight 1v1, and Karthus's R is negated by your R's knockback if you use it preemptively when he dies.

How to Trade

  • Your optimal trade pattern is to place a soldier behind or beside Karthus, Q through him to reposition the soldier for auto-attack procs, then E back to safety before his W can slow you into a sustained damage situation.
  • Never stand still in his W zone fishing for extra autos — the DPS you gain is not worth the stacking damage he deals while you're rooted in place.

Wave Control

  • You want to shove the wave consistently using soldiers on the wave, then look to roam or control vision, because Karthus is a weak laner who scales into a global threat — denying him farm and XP early is more valuable than winning individual trades.
  • Avoid letting the wave freeze near your tower, as Karthus can safely farm under tower with Q and you lose the pressure advantage your range provides.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not use your R purely as an escape tool and forget that it also cancels Karthus's R channel — if Karthus is low and commits to dying in your face, you must track his death and R immediately to deny his team the damage, because failing to do so is one of the most impactful mistakes you can make in this matchup.
