Pre-6, you win short trades if you land your Q dash combo and immediately disengage before Jax can stack his passive and retaliate — at level 3 you gain your full Q-E-Q pattern which gives you a meaningful damage burst window, but Jax's E negates a significant portion of your auto-attack damage during trades, so extended fights heavily favor him even early.
Post-6, your R gives you a strong all-in threat but Jax's R provides him a reliable AoE stun and massive damage spike that can punish your engage if you commit without it being on cooldown.

Your optimal trade pattern is to use Q to dash in, proc your passive empowered auto, weave in E for the slow, then immediately Q again to reposition out before Jax can activate his E counter-strike — you are looking for short, decisive burst windows, not sustained brawls.
Never auto-attack freely into an active Jax E; wait for it to expire before committing your empowered autos, as losing those to his dodge dramatically reduces your trade efficiency.

You want to maintain a slight freeze or slow push near your tower to deny Jax the ability to freely all-in you under his own tower safety, since he scales harder into mid-game and a pushed wave gives him free pressure.
Use your Q mobility to harass him during his last-hitting animations, but avoid overextending for poke that puts you in range of his full combo when his E is available.

Do not commit to a full all-in when Jax has his E available and his passive stacks are building — many Ambessa players see their R as a guaranteed kill window but Jax's E into R counter-sequence can completely reverse the fight.
Avoid burning your Q dashes purely for poke if it leaves you without an escape route, as Jax's W into E can close the gap and punish you severely when you are repositioning.
