Who Wins

  • Pre-6, Olaf wins most extended trades due to his true damage on E, built-in lifesteal scaling with missing HP, and the fact that your Determination stacks are not yet meaningful enough to offset his raw damage output.
  • You can contest short trades at level 3 by landing W to pull him in, immediately following with E outer-edge damage and Q double-hit, but you must disengage before his E fully shreds you — do not let him dictate trade length early.

How to Trade

  • Post-6, you gain a significant power spike because R lets you engage on your terms, stack Determination faster, and your revive passive becomes a genuine threat multiplier.
  • However, Olaf's R removes all CC, which means your W pull and any knockup from Q recast are nullified during his ultimate — never commit your full combo into his R, wait for it to expire before using W.

Wave Control

  • Your optimal trading pattern is W to pull him into E outer-edge range, immediately Q for the double-hit healing, then back off to let your passive stacks accumulate before re-engaging.
  • Avoid extended brawls unless your Determination is near max, because Olaf's lifesteal and true damage will outlast you in a prolonged fight without the AD bonus and revive insurance active.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not use W reactively as an escape tool — it pulls enemies toward you, and mistiming it while Olaf is already on top of you will extend the trade in his favor rather than creating distance.
  • Respect his low-HP power spike; when Olaf is below 30% HP, his E deals significantly more true damage and he becomes more dangerous, not less.
