Who Wins
- Pre-6, Volibear wins most extended trades because his W empowered auto resets deal more burst damage than your Q sustain can offset, and his E slow makes it hard to disengage once he commits.
- Post-6, your R gives you a reliable all-in tool, but Volibear's R also provides him with a strong counter-engage, so the 1v1 remains close and depends heavily on who initiates with more HP.
How to Trade
- Your best trading pattern is to use Q when Volibear has already used his W empowered auto, so you absorb less burst while still healing; short trades where you Q and immediately back off are more favorable than extended fights where his W resets stack up.
- Avoid letting him stack his passive by fighting him at low HP, as his W healing combined with his passive makes him extremely hard to kill once he gets low.
Wave Control
- Push the wave consistently to deny Volibear the ability to freely walk up and stack his passive in short skirmishes near minions; a pushed wave forces him to farm under tower, which limits his all-in threat.
- Avoid freezing the wave in front of him, as it gives him a safe environment to harass you with his E slow and W combo without risk of being caught out.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not fight Volibear when he has his W available and you are below 50% HP, because his passive healing combined with W burst will likely kill you before your Q sustain can compensate.
- Avoid using R as a pure engage tool without first confirming Volibear's R is on cooldown, since his R can interrupt your suppression and turn the fight entirely in his favor.
