Pre-6, you win short trades at level 1-2 due to your healing and raw damage output, but Ornn's W at level 2 applies Brittle and his passive shield absorbs a chunk of your burst — you need to respect that he can proc Brittle with his auto after W to deal significant bonus damage if you overstay.
At level 3 he gains his full trade pattern (W into E knockup), which makes extended trades dangerous for you since his Unstoppable during W means you cannot suppress him mid-combo with your R.
Post-6, Ornn wins decisively — his R gives him a reliable way to set up his full combo from range, and your R suppression is countered by his W Unstoppable, meaning he can simply W while you try to engage and deny your primary tool.

Your best trade pattern is to wait for Ornn to use his W or E on cooldown, then immediately all-in with your Q to close distance and auto-attack chain while his main damage and Brittle application are unavailable.
You heal through his passive shield and poke damage over time, so short burst windows where you deal damage and disengage before he can proc Brittle with an auto are your safest approach.
Never let him complete the W-then-auto or E-then-auto Brittle proc sequence, as that bonus damage stacks up significantly in extended fights.

You want to shove the wave quickly using your Q and autos to deny Ornn the ability to farm safely under tower, since he is slow and struggles to last-hit under pressure without losing HP.
Avoid freezing near his tower because his W and E give him enough range to poke you during your attempts to CS, and his passive shield means he can absorb your retaliatory trades.
Prioritize getting the wave into a state where you can roam, as your impact mid-game is far greater than Ornn's in skirmishes.

Do not attempt to use your R to suppress Ornn while he is channeling his W — he is Unstoppable during it, your suppression will fail, and you will have wasted your primary engage tool while he completes his Brittle application and procs it with an auto.
This is the single most punishable mistake in this matchup and will cost you trades or your life if you are low.
