Pre-6, you win extended trades if you can stack Fury before engaging — Shen's W reduces your auto-attack damage significantly, but his damage output is low enough that you can outlast him once your Q sustain is active; at level 3 you gain meaningful all-in threat if Shen has no Fury stacks built and his W is on cooldown.
Post-6, Shen wins the 1v1 decisively because your R is a desperation tool while his R lets him disengage, heal, and return with full W uptime, making it nearly impossible to kill him without burning his R first.

Your best trading pattern is to auto-attack to build Fury, then look to extended trades only when Shen's W is on cooldown — his W has a short duration but a meaningful cooldown, so baiting it with one or two autos before committing to a full trade with E into sustained autos plus Q heal is your highest-damage window.
Never short-trade into Shen; his passive shield and W make short trades heavily favor him, so you must commit to long fights where your Q sustain and Fury-empowered crits can overcome his damage reduction.

You want to shove the wave consistently to deny Shen the ability to freely roam with his R — if he leaves lane with a slow wave, you lose global pressure and he gets free value.
Push to his tower, back, and repeat; do not freeze or slow-push because Shen is a weak duelist under tower and you can dive him post-6 if he is low, but only if you have Fury stacked and his R is confirmed on cooldown.

Do not blindly all-in Shen when his W is active — many Tryndamere players see a melee champion and assume they can brawl freely, but trading into an active W dramatically reduces your DPS and can flip a winning trade into a losing one.
Also, never use your R purely to survive a 1v1 against Shen in lane; save it for split-push pressure or escaping ganks, because Shen will simply disengage with E and wait out your R timer.
