Who Wins
- Pre-6, you have a meaningful range advantage and your E stacks force him to respect short trades, but Malzahar's W zone control and passive shield regeneration make extended trades risky if you let him poke freely; neither champion dominates cleanly early, but you edge out 1v1 if you play aggressively before his shield is up.
- Post-6, his R is a hard counter to your R engage — he can cast R on you mid-jump and you will die in the suppression window, making post-6 1v1 heavily in his favor unless you have a significant gold lead.
How to Trade
- Your best pattern is to auto-E-auto to stack the bomb, then disengage before his W voidlings can deal meaningful damage — short burst trades where you reset with Q movement speed are your safest option.
- Never commit to a full trade without his passive shield being down, as it absorbs your first hit and delays your E stacks, which is enough time for his W to start hurting.
Wave Control
- You want to push the wave fast with Q attack speed and shove him under tower, denying him the safe space to set up W and farm passively — a frozen wave near his tower is dangerous for you because it gives him free W placement.
- Avoid letting the wave sit in the middle of the lane where he can zone you with W while safely farming.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not use your R as an engage tool in this matchup post-6 — he can R you out of the air or immediately after landing, and you have no way to break his suppression.
- Jumping in without a clear kill condition or without his R being on cooldown is the single most common way to throw a winnable game state.
