Who Wins

Pre-6 you win at range if you consistently land Q and auto-harass when Irelia goes for CS, but the moment she gets 5 stacks and dashes onto you with E, you lose the short trade decisively; at level 3 she can all-in you if you're low enough, so respect her passive-stacked burst window.
Post-6 you have a kill threat with R into E stun combo, but Irelia's R gives her enough sustain and CC to survive or trade back, so you need to land E stun before committing R or she will simply out-damage you through the exchange.

Your optimal trade pattern is to Q a minion to create a sphere, then Q Irelia directly and immediately E the sphere into her to proc the stun, following up with autos and W before she can dash out; this burst window is your highest damage output and forces her to back off or die.
Never engage in extended trades where she can freely auto you with her passive stacked, because her damage ramps significantly and your kit has no mobility to disengage once she's on top of you.

You want to push the wave consistently with Q to deny her passive stacks on minions and force her to CS under tower, which reduces her ability to freely stack and all-in you; a shoved wave also gives you time to roam or set up vision.
Avoid letting the wave slow-push toward you, as a large wave near your tower gives her a safe environment to dash through minions, stack her passive, and engage on you with minimal risk of being punished.

Do not use E reactively as a panic button when she dashes onto you without a sphere already placed, because E without a sphere does no damage and wastes your only hard CC, leaving you completely defenseless for several seconds.
Burning your stun on a non-sphere E is the single most common reason Syndra loses this matchup outright, as Irelia will simply kill you during the cooldown.
