Who Wins

  • Pre-6 you lose the lane if you play straight into Malzahar's range — his voidlings and passive shield mean short trades heavily favor him, and you have no way to force a sustained fight before level 3 when you have E to close.
  • Post-6 the matchup becomes a question of whether you can land E into a full W trade before he channels R on you; if he gets the suppression off first you likely lose the fight outright, so you need to bait or dodge his R to win.

How to Trade

  • Your best trading pattern is to use E to close the gap when his passive shield is already down from voidling or Q poke, then immediately auto-W-auto to maximize your W passive burst before he can reposition.
  • Extended fights favor you over time if you stay mounted, but Malzahar's voidlings will continuously deal damage during the trade, so you need the trade to be decisive rather than drawn out.

Wave Control

  • You want to slow-push or freeze the wave near your side to force Malzahar to overextend for CS, which gives you a window to all-in without him having easy escape distance to his tower.
  • Freezing also denies him the ability to shove and roam freely, which is dangerous given your R is a strong counter-roam tool — if he roams, you can R to follow or take tower plates.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not walk into Malzahar's voidlings repeatedly trying to trade small — each voidling hit is free damage he takes no risk for, and if you're dismounted without full Courage built, you are extremely vulnerable to his R since you have no dash to escape the suppression.
  • Never engage when his R is available unless you have a clear angle to interrupt his channel with your own movement or have enough HP to survive the full suppression duration.
