Scuttle Contest

  • At level 3, you beat Vel'Koz at the scuttle fight by closing distance aggressively with Q and E — his entire damage output requires him to keep you at range, and once you are on top of him his Q becomes hard to land and his W loses effectiveness.
  • From level 6, your sure win condition is to engage through a wall with E directly onto him, immediately use Q to close any micro-gap, and burst him before he can land a full rotation; if he gets his full combo off at distance, he will kill you, so the engagement must be instant and in his face.

Predicted Jungle Path

  • Vel'Koz jungle typically clears a standard full clear path (Blue > Gromp > Wolves > Raptors > Red > Krugs or the reverse) because he needs multiple camps to stack his passive and generate enough gold to be relevant.
  • He will avoid early skirmishes and look to farm safely to a power spike, so expect him to cede early scuttle if pressured and instead focus on objective control once he has items.

Invade or Not

  • Invading Vel'Koz is viable and recommended — he has no mobility, no escape tool, and is extremely vulnerable when caught in his own jungle without room to kite.
  • The optimal invade timing is level 3 (around 3:15), targeting whichever buff he is finishing second; approach through a wall with E to cut off his retreat and force a fight where he cannot maintain distance.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not underestimate Vel'Koz's burst if you give him time to set up — walking into his full Q into W into E combo at range will delete you even as Rhaast, and his R deals massive true damage that bypasses your healing.
  • Avoid engaging when you are below 60% HP without a clear path to close distance instantly, as he will simply kite you to death with slows and knockups before you can proc enough passive to sustain.
