Who Wins

  • Pre-6, you lose most extended trades against Sion because his W shield absorbs your burst and his passive stacks make him tankier over time; however, if you can proc your passive with 4+ stacks and land E on him during his W wind-up, you can win short burst trades before the shield fully charges.
  • Post-6, your R gives you an engage tool but Sion's R and his raw durability still make extended fights dangerous — you win only if you can reset Q multiple times on minions to stay mobile and avoid his CC.

How to Trade

  • Your best pattern is to bait his W by walking in, then immediately E him as he starts the channel to interrupt his damage and apply the stagger, then chain Q resets on nearby minions to stay in range for short burst trades before disengaging.
  • Never let him fully charge W; if you see it activating, either E immediately or back off, because eating a full W into his passive stacks will lose you the trade decisively.

Wave Control

  • You want to maintain a small minion wave advantage so you always have Q reset targets available during trades, preventing Sion from simply outlasting you with his shield and passive.
  • Avoid letting the wave crash into your tower repeatedly, as Sion's Q and W give him strong freeze potential under tower, which removes your Q mobility and makes you a stationary target for his CC.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not fight him when his W is available and you have no E to interrupt it — this is the single most common way Irelia players lose this lane, as eating a full W shield plus passive stacks negates your entire damage output.
  • Also avoid overcommitting with R into a full-health Sion with passive stacks active, as you will not have the burst to kill him and he will outlast your combo.
